Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah, the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. Latifah's mother and father separated after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and gentle in Arabic was given by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward on her high school team was always tall. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah started beatboxing in the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's first group, which included a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
